Nanping, located in the northern part of Fujian province, is renowned for its rich mountainous resources and ecological charm with various tourist spots such as the World Heritage site Mount Wuyi and Wuyishan National Park.

As of the end of 2025, the city had a resident population of 3.08 million and covered an area of 26,300 square kilometers, making it the largest city in Fujian in terms of area with subordinate districts. It shares borders with Ningde to the east and Sanming to the south, Zhejiang province to the north and Jiangxi province to the west.

Ecology is Nanping's greatest asset. In October 2011, Nanping was awarded the "national eco-friendly model area" by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, becoming the only national-level ecological demonstration city in the province.

Nanping, where Fujian's largest river — the Minjiang — originates, has long been celebrated for its lush mountains and clear water. This well preserved natural enviroment has attracted major water companies like Nongfu Spring and China Resources' C'estbon Beverage, also enabling Nanping to become the largest ganoderma production base in the world.

Thanks to its rich ecological resources, Nanping produces a wide variety of green and high-quality agricultural products. Over the past decades, the city has developed competitive fruit, vegetable, and edible fungi industries and cultivated green and characteristic tea, bamboo, and water industries.

Nanping has also enhanced the culture and tourism sector. Rural tourism is growing rapidly in the area due to local revolutionary history and culture as well as the unspoiled natural environment. For instance, in the city's Nanyuanling village, villagers have renovated their houses into restaurants and homestays, benefitting from local tourism development.

Nanping is also home to many natural resources, including 31.13 million hectares of forests, one river, and more than 50 different types of minerals.

In 2025, the city's GDP was 218.97 billion yuan ($32.27 billion), an increase of 5.0 percent compared to that of 2024, according to official data. The added value of the city's primary, secondary, and tertiary industries reached 40.32 billion yuan, 70.9 billion yuan, and 107.74 billion yuan in 2024, increasing by 4.0 percent, 4.9 percent, 5.3 percent respectively.

Per capita disposable income of urban and rural residents rose to 46,670 yuan and 26,258 yuan in 2025, respectively, increasing by 4.1 percent and 5.7 percent.
