Sino-UK joint institute in Minnan Normal University to fuel Fujian's industrial clusters
Minnan Normal University's Aston Institute, established in collaboration with Aston University in the UK, recently received approval from the Ministry of Education. This partnership aims to cultivate talent in support of Fujian's "555X" industrial clusters, a key initiative under the province's 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30).
Amid Fujian's rapid growth in the trillion-yuan (147.7-billion-dollar) electronic information industry and emerging AI sector, the institute offers programs in electronic information engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, and computer technology. By incorporating Aston University's advanced STEM curriculum, the institute seeks to develop versatile engineering professionals with expertise in data mining, intelligent algorithms, and systems development.
Aligned with Fujian's strategy to enhance its 500-billion-yuan green food industry and expand its biopharmaceutical sector, the institute offers programs in biological sciences, biomedicine, and related fields. These focus on processing specialty agricultural products, ensuring food safety, and developing functional foods to boost the efficiency of Fujian's modern agriculture. Students also benefit from Sino-British joint training, spending at least one year in the UK to gain international perspectives and practical skills.
By leveraging top-tier business education resources, the institute also nurtures practical business talent. As a core area of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, Fujian needs international business professionals. Aston University's Business School, globally recognized through its AMBA, EQUIS, and AACSB accreditations, provides a strong foundation for the institute's international business program. This initiative combines global business standards with Fujian's trade expertise to develop talent that supports the Belt and Road Initiative and RCEP economic cooperation.
Minnan Normal University is advancing the development of an international industry institute and an overseas academic exchange center to explore new models for cultivating global talent. The Aston Institute supports this strategy by optimizing international educational resources and aligning talent training with industry needs, thereby promoting Fujian's industries along the Maritime Silk Road.
